Common spring plumbing problems

Every spring we commonly find:

  • Outdoor faucets cracked from freezing
  • Shut-off valves that no longer seal properly
  • Leaks that appear when water pressure returns
  • Loose or damaged exterior fittings

Catching these problems early can prevent more serious plumbing issues later in the season.

Why spring is when leaks show up?

Many plumbing issues caused by freezing temperatures don’t appear during winter.

They show up when the water is turned back on.

A small crack in a faucet or valve may stay hidden until pressure returns to the line. When that happens, leaks can start inside the wall or around the exterior of your home.

A quick inspection before heavy outdoor water use can help prevent unexpected leaks and water damage.

What we check:

During your De-winterization appointment, our technician will inspect and test the components that are most likely to be affected by winter weather.

  • Outdoor faucet operation
The faucet is turned on and off while the system is pressurized to check for leaks, cracks, or internal freeze damage.
  • Exterior shut-off valves
The shutoff that feeds the outdoor line is tested to confirm it opens and closes properly and isn’t seized or leaking.
  • Water pressure at the outdoor line
Pressure is checked to make sure the line can handle normal use without stressing fittings or valves.
  • Connections and fittings
Hose connections and exterior fittings are inspected for corrosion, thread damage, or leaks.
  • Visible exterior water lines
Any exposed piping around the home is checked for freeze splits, expansion damage, or loose fittings.
  • Backflow prevention / anti-siphon components
If present, these are checked to confirm they are functioning correctly.
  • Leak check inside wall or basement area
The line feeding the exterior faucet is checked inside the home while the faucet runs to ensure no hidden leak developed over winter.
  • Drain / winterization valve (if installed)
The winter shutoff and drain are inspected to make sure they are sealed correctly and didn’t fail during freeze cycles.d
